BTMS-50 Mass Balance contains components, like cetearyl alcohol, that are sourced from mass balance palm. Cetearyl alcohol almost always comes from palm oil, as it is nearly impossible to source cetearyl alcohol on a commercial scale from other plants. There is no producer that will guarantee cetearyl alcohol comes from non-palm sources. Therefore, it is critical to use cetearyl alcohol from mass balance palm certified sources as a step towards sustainable palm use.
Cetearyl Alcohol is made from palm oil, as it undergoes a chemical reaction to release free fatty acids like palmitic acid and stearic acid. This mixture is distilled to separate palmitic acid and stearic acids, where they are converted to cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol. Cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are weighed out in equal portions and melted together to become cetearyl alcohol.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate is made by collecting rapeseed oil and extracting erucic acid. This undergoes hydrogenation and chemical reaction to become behentrimonium methosulfate.

Works best in emulsions with an oil phase that’s 10-25% of the formulation.
For thicker products, consider adding more Cetearyl Alcohol to increase viscosity.
Anionic (negatively charged) ingredients like Xanthan Gum
You can use two vessels or one! For two vessels, one is used for the water phase and the other for the oil premix. Heat both to 80ºC and add the oil into the water with rapid mixing for approximately 10 minutes before gently cooling. For one vessel, add BTMS-50 MB to the water, before adding your oils, so it acts as a bridge between both phases. Homogenization helps create better emulsions in both scenarios.

RSPO Palm Kernel Oil undergoes transesterification to liberate free fatty acids.
This mixture is distlled to separated palmitic and stearic acids, where they are converted to Cetearyl Alcohol.
Separately, erucic acid is separated from rapeseed or canola oil, and is hydrogenated to form behenic acid.
Behenic Acid is reacted chemically to form the positively charged Behentrimonium Methosulfate.
Both ingredients are combined to form this duo emulsifier-stabilizer.
Broccoli Seed Oil takes this ordinary conditioner to the next level, leaving coarse hair feeling smooth and silky. BTMS-50 MB emulsifies and stabilizes this formula, which providing conditioning properties to hair.
