What It is

BTMS-50 Mass Balance a cationic emulsifier and thickener featuring Behentrimonium Methosulfate and Cetyl Alcohol at a 50-50 ratio. Not only does it create medium-bodied emulsions, it makes a create conditioning agent for hair or skin.

BTMS helps condition hair in its wet stages, not only making it easier to comb when wet, but also improving the wet feel (how it feels when wet). It is also known to reduce frizz in hair.

Make skincare products? Don’t feel left out! BTMS is excellent in lotions and other skincare products as well.

Free from butylene glycol. Kosher. Halal.

Why Mass Balance?

BTMS-50 Mass Balance contains components, like cetyl alcohol, that are sourced from mass balance palm. Cetyl alcohol almost always comes from palm oil, as it is nearly impossible to source cetyl alcohol on a commercial scale from other plants. There is no producer that will guarantee cetyl alcohol comes from non-palm sources. Therefore, it is critical to use cetyl alcohol from mass balance palm certified sources as a step towards sustainable palm use.

How It's Made

Cetyl Alcohol is made from palm oil, as it undergoes a chemical reaction to release free fatty acids like palmitic acid. This mixture is distilled to separate palmitic acid, where it is converted to cetyl alcohol.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate is made by collecting rapeseed oil and extracting erucic acid. This undergoes hydrogenation and chemical reaction to become behentrimonium methosulfate.

Tips and Tricks

Works best in emulsions with an oil phase that’s 10-25% of the formulation.
For thicker products, consider adding more Cetyl Alcohol to increase viscosity.

Incompatibilities

Anionic (negatively charged) ingredients like Xanthan Gum

Directions for Emulsification

You can use two vessels or one! For two vessels, one is used for the water phase and the other for the oil premix. Heat both to 80ºC and add the oil into the water with rapid mixing for approximately 10 minutes before gently cooling. For one vessel, add BTMS-50 MB to the water, before adding your oils, so it acts as a bridge between both phases. Homogenization helps create better emulsions in both scenarios.

Add Distilled or Deionized Water to top portion of the double boiler and begin heating to 170 - 175ºF. In a small mixing bowl, add Organic Glycerin and guar gum together in a slurry. Mix by hand with a spoon until it looks homogenous. Pour the slurry into the main double boiler and use an immersion blender to fully disperse the mixture.

Add #4 and mixing gently with mixing spoon until dissolved.

Once main vessel reaches temperature, start adding ingredients #5-8, one by one until each is dissolved, making sure to gently stir with a spoon. While heating and melting, make sure to cover the double boiler with a lid, especially while the behentrimonium methosulfate is dissolving, so too much water doesn’t evaporate. Once dissolved, use an immersion blender to blend to a milky white texture.

Turn off the heat and remove double boiler from the heat source. Begin stirring gently with spoon while the mixture cools down. At 105 - 110ºF, add #9. Once completely cooled, mixture will thicken.

Pour into containers and enjoy!
