This is the world’s first seaweed-based cosmetic emulsifier that reduces CO2 emissions while preventing the loss of biodiversity and degradation of beach ecosystems. CarbonWave is at just the beginning of making our world a better place.
Sargassum Fluitans/Natans Extract, Xanthan Gum, Pentylene Glycol
SeaBalance 2000 is the world's first seaweed-based cosmetic emulsifier, powered by Carbonwave. It is an award-winning emulsifier that delivers performance with natural origins from Sargassum seaweed. This upcycled emulsifier can be used to create fluid, low viscosity oil-in-water pickering emulsions—either via cold process or in a traditional hot process. Not only does it emulsify your favorite polar plant oils and esters, it leaves a soft and silky feeling on skin. SeaBalance 2000 has also been shown to increase skin hydration by 27% over 2 hours!
We are a proud partner and exclusive reseller of SeaBalance 2000 to the DIY community. Join the seaweed revolution!
Sargassum seaweed is the “weed” of the ocean, and is so abundant, it can be seen from outer space. Massive quantities of sargassum wash on shore in beach communities, rotting and releasing methane emissions. This not only makes for a stinky beach experience, it is a significant contributor to global warming. In fact, 20 Megatons of Sargassum wash up on beaches in the Caribbean yearly, resulting in:
- 8.4 megatons of CO2e emitted per year
- 30-35% decline in tourism in Quintana Roo, Mexico, alone
- Biodiversity loss and degradation of beach ecosystems
Carbonwave is dedicated to minimizing the impact Sargassum seaweed has on the beaches, which are vital to local economies. For every ton of seaweed used, 450 kg of CO₂e is saved from entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
Carbonwave works with local communities in Mexico to collect the seaweed as it makes landfall. The biomass is collected before it decomposes and releases stinky methane emissions. It’s gently rinsed, dried and transported to Puerto Rico, where Carbonwave’s proprietary process extracts the emulsifying components from the sargassum to produce SeaBalance 2000.

Using SeaBalance 2000 at a higher pH may result in an oceanic odor
Add citric acid to your water phase before adding SeaBalance 2000. This will reduce any odor.
Homogenize immediately after adding SeaBalance 2000. This will disperse it evenly.
Works best with plant-based oils. May exhibit freeze/thaw challenges with non-polar oils or esters.
Use in emulsions with an oil phase that’s 5-15% of the formulation.
Cationic ingredients. Xanthan Gum carries a negative charge so it will complex with anything positively charged.
Add SeaBalance 2000 to your water phase and disperse using a homogenizer or immersion blender. Once dispersed, add the remainder of your oil phase and continue to homogenize until no large oil droplets are seen.
